The list of individual freedoms, known as the Bill of Rights, was never part of the original Constitution. It took nearly 3 additional years before our founders added the amendments, which now protect our essential rights. 
 
Without these amendments, our Constitution would never have stood the test of time, creating the foundation for and protecting our personal liberties. 
 
This version includes the original 12 Amendments. Congress originally approved the first 12 Bill of Rights (not 10), as a joint resolution, on September 25, 1789. When these articles moved to final state ratification to be included in the FINAL constitution, two amendments were not voted in. Thus we were left with only 10. However, in 1917 one of the original articles that were not approved at the time were actually approved as the 27th article.
